Credit and debit cards are widely accepted throughout Cartagena and will be the easiest option for most restaurants, hotels, and larger businesses.
Cash is still useful for taxis, tips, smaller shops, and street vendors. Both U.S. dollars and Colombian Pesos (COP) may be accepted in these situations, though acceptance of U.S. dollars is not guaranteed and exchange rates can vary.
For convenience and safety, exchanging money at the Cartagena airport upon arrival is recommended. Have your passport and hotel accomodations ready as they will ask for that information.
U.S. dollars can be used in some places, but not everywhere. Credit cards and Colombian Pesos are the most widely accepted and reliable forms of payment.

Uber is generally the preferred and most convenient option for getting around Cartagena. It allows you to see your fare upfront, avoids price negotiation, and can be paid by credit or debit card.
Taxis are also available, but many require cash payment, with Colombian Pesos (COP) preferred. Some taxis have posted rates, while others do not, so fares may vary depending on the trip. For simplicity and transparency, we recommend using Uber whenever possible, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the area.

As with any international destination, we encourage everyone to exercise common sense and basic travel awareness. Be mindful of your belongings, avoid acting flashy, and trust your instincts.
You may encounter local vendors offering goods or services. A polite “No, gracias” and continuing to walk is perfectly acceptable. Please be respectful and avoid engaging in arguments or harassment.
Overall, Cartagena is welcoming and vibrant, and with normal precautions, you should feel comfortable exploring and enjoying the city.
